So I was looking at getting my first Single-Ended Triode Tube amplifier, an EL34 based Chinese design, and I was looking around for high efficiency full range speakers to run with it. Off I went to Parts Express and Madisound and so forth, researching the usual suspects (Fostex, SEAS, Morel & so forth.) and I forget how but I ended up on Amazon and encountered this beasty.
The specs the Amazon pics show look pretty badass. That price though. I mean they'd be worth it if they perform as those specs suggest and if the driver weren't poorly constructed (in reality, not in pictures). Googling pulls up literally nothing. Perhaps Xizi Audio (cheesy.? Lol) manufactures these speakers? Anyhow, there's also an interesting looking, an All look pretty interesting.
Thinking about picking up one of their cheaper models just to see if they are legit. Those 10' full rangers would kick some ass in a TQWT enclosure. For the range of $500 I'd also be looking at Lowther. I know someone who got lucky and found some used AER for not much more than that. He said that he'd previously been using the Tang Band 1808 and it was surpisingly good for the price, used in a front loaded Oris 150 horn along with subs and an active crossover.
When you trade an electrical crossover for a mechanical crossover (as I'd argue these 'full range' drivers are), then you're putting a lot of faith in whoever designed and built the driver. I'm not really looking at spending $500 on a pair of fullrangers.
This was just a curiosity and I wanted to see if anyone else has ever seen or played with these speakers (or any model from this brand). I agree 100% with your conclusions. Also, I already have a pair of 6.5' Dayton PS180-8 and pair of 8' Dayton PS220-8 from another project that I will likely use with the SET amp I just bought. Both are fairly high efficiency and I would run either in a 2-way with a tweeter as well as a discrete subwoofer crossed with a MiniDSP.
I'm thinking about building a, only instead of using the 'JA8008' driver, use my Dayton PS220-8 in its place. Their specs are quite close, IMO. I wouldn't expect identical results to Mr Gravesen's results, but should be in the same ballpark, which is to say pretty damn good performance.
I did pick up a pair of these which looks more/less identical to the 10' driver design, but at a far more palpable price of $85/pair. It is also available via Prime, so if they're horrible I can just send it back.
